Confederate Civil War Kepi |
This kepi is one of several artifacts associated with Colonel John R. Lane. The gold braid on the hat indicates
Lane's rank as an officer and there is a gilded button with the North Carolina coat of arms on each side. Lane was born in
Chatham County in 1835. His Confederate service began in May 1861 and he quickly rose in rank from private to colonel. After
assuming command of the Twenty-sixth Regiment North Carolina Troops on July 1, 1863, at Gettysburg, Lane was immediately wounded
(26th North Carolina Infantry
Regiment). Lane managed to survive the war despite a series of wounds. He returned to Chatham County after the war where
he became a successful farmer and businessman. He died in 1908. (See American Civil War Photographs and North Carolina Civil War Pictures.)

Recommended Reading: Covered With Glory: The 26th North Carolina Infantry at Gettysburg. Description: Award-winning historian, Rod Gragg, delivers a masterpiece
with his renowned study of the Fighting
26th. Rated a solid 5 STARS (highest possible rating), Covered With Glory reflects vividly the
fighting history of the 26th, led by General Robert E. Lee's youngest regimental colonel, 21-year-old Colonel Henry K. Burgwyn,
Jr. Student, Scholar, and Civil War Buff, this is a must have addition for your library. Continued below…
From Library Journal: Award-winning
historian Gragg offers yet another Civil War title. The 26th North Carolina saw action early
in the war at New Bern and Malvern Hill. On the first day at Gettysburg, it fought against the 24th Michigan in McPherson's Woods. On the third
and final day, it participated in the infamous Pickett's Charge and suffered an 85 percent casualty rate, the highest of any
regiment in the Civil War. Besides recounting the enormous loss of life and the heroic deeds of many men, Gragg reveals the
human side of battle. Family diaries and letters describe the difficulties most soldiers faced in coping with military life.
The author uses an impressive list of other books and historical sources. What emerges is a detailed but readable history
of a regiment whose sacrifices and exploits merit studying. Recommended for its scholarship and depth of coverage to all academic
and large public libraries and to special collections.
Recommended Reading: The Life of Johnny Reb: The Common Soldier of the Confederacy (444 pages) (Louisiana
State University Press) (Updated edition: November 2007) Description: The
Life of Johnny Reb does not merely describe the battles and skirmishes
fought by the Confederate foot soldier. Rather, it provides an intimate history of a soldier's daily life--the songs he sang,
the foods he ate, the hopes and fears he experienced, the reasons he fought. Wiley examined countless letters, diaries, newspaper
accounts, and official records to construct this frequently poignant, sometimes humorous account of the life of Johnny Reb.

Recommended Reading: Hardtack
& Coffee or The Unwritten Story of Army Life. Description:
Most histories of the Civil War focus on battles and top brass. Hardtack and
Coffee is one of the few to give a vivid, detailed picture of what ordinary soldiers endured every day—in camp, on the
march, at the edge of a booming, smoking hell. John D. Billings of Massachusetts enlisted in the Army of the Potomac and survived the hellish conditions as a “common
foot soldier” of the American Civil War. "Billings describes an insightful account of
the conflict – the experiences of every day life as a common foot-soldier – and a view of the war that is sure
to score with every buff." Continued below...
The
authenticity of his book is heightened by the many drawings that a comrade, Charles W. Reed, made while in the field. This
is the story of how the Civil War soldier was recruited, provisioned, and disciplined. Described here are the types of men
found in any outfit; their not very uniform uniforms; crowded tents and makeshift shelters; difficulties in keeping clean,
warm, and dry; their pleasure in a cup of coffee; food rations, dominated by salt pork and the versatile cracker or hardtack;
their brave pastimes in the face of death; punishments for various offenses; treatment in sick bay; firearms and signals and
modes of transportation. Comprehensive and anecdotal, Hardtack and Coffee is striking for the pulse of life that runs through
it.
